Responding to the rapid change and awareness of the revolutionary stage of the country’s development, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (Ramseyer Memorial Congregation, Adum-Kumasi) fulfilling her Christian service responsibility started the Ramseyer Institute Project. This was an Agricultural and Vocational Training Centre at the lake road mile 6, Kumasi. The official establishment day of the Ramseyer Institute was on Friday, October 1, 1976, with her first Warden/Principal as Rev. G.C. Fliegenschnee.
In 1972-73, the Ramseyer Memorial Congregation, Adum-Kumasi acquired 150 acres of land for a secondary school from the Kumasi City Council. In January-June 1974, the Christian Service in the Society (C.S.S) Group with Rev. G.C. Fliegenschnee did research work and studies among the unemployed people in Kumasi. Numerous training centers were consulted and based on the outcome of the consultation, Rev. G.C. Fliegenschnee presented the idea of the Agricultural Vocational Training Centre to the Session (Elders) of the Church. On June 10, 1974, the Session took up the idea, changed the site’s purpose, and revised the existing Committee to plan and prepare for the Project. On August 18, 1974, a paper called ‘Ramseyer Institute Technical Vocational and Agricultural Training Centre’ was presented to the Committee and to the Session.
A 21-member Committee met on this purpose until the decision was finally approved by the General Meeting. The first signboard “SITE FOR RAMSEYER INSTITUTE (Presbyterian Church)” was put up at the acquired site on September 6, 1974. Sod cutting ceremony followed three days after by Col. E. O. Nyante (Regional Commissioner for Education, Culture and Sports) and Rt. Rev. G. K. Sintim-Misa (Moderator, Presbyterian Church of Ghana) during the centenary celebration of Rev. Fritz Ramseyer. That is to say that the Institute was named after Rev. Fritz Ramseyer in his memory.
A year later in February, the master plan and the detailed plans for phase one arrived from Mr. Franz Wiessing and a rough estimate for the whole project according to the master plan for the final stage was prepared by Architectural and Engineering Services Corporation, Consultants to the Government of Ghana. Thereafter, the first-ever memorandum 1, “Our Goal” written by the Chairman, Mr. T. E. Kyei was presented and approved. In May 1975, Rev. Kwansah presented the Ramseyer Institute project at the Ghana Consultation in Basel. The Ramseyer Institute project was then put on the project-list of the Church in May 1975.
Amount of GHC 4,000 now GHC 4.00 was donated by the Ramseyer Memorial Congregation, Adum – Kumasi on July 6, 1975, to start clearing of the site for the 4 Departments. This clearing exercise was also supported with a subsidized caterpillar from the Ministry of Agriculture. Mr. Samuel Hayford, a Farm Field Officer at Kwadaso Agricultural College and Wenchi State Farm was appointed to start with the preparatory work on the poultry-training farm and on the vegetable training farm.
In September 6, 1975, the first ever wooden hut was raised as a store room and in that same month, first farm laborers were employed for the preparatory work.
The first meeting with a Government official in the person of Mr. Larkey, Project Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare from Accra showed interest in the cooperation because there was a gap in the national network of Vocational training in Kumasi. As a result, 1000 day-old chicks were bought. Mr. Hayford started to grow his first seedlings and then vegetables on the Vegetable Training Farm. The hencoop-building project started under the auspices of the Technical Aid of the Social Welfare Department, Accra.
Voluntary work done at the Ramseyer Institute site was shared among the various groupings on Saturdays. By November 26, 1975 the first vegetables were ready for harvest. Mr. Jim Roth gave a helping hand at the start and showed interest in coming into the project.
In 1976, the new Board of Governors was formed since the former Committee was dissolved.
The initial Programmes offered in Ramseyer Institute were four (4) namely; Agriculture, Building Trade (Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical), Metal Work and Home Science.
In January 2024, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Ministry of Education reached a partnership agreement and handed over the management of Ramseyer Technical Institute to the Ghana TVET Service per the Pre-Tertiary Education Act 2020 (Act 1049). The first Principal appointed under the Public TVET regime was Rev. Samuel Asamoa Ayeh-Hanson under the Board Chairmanship of Rev. Samuel Ahima-Yeboah (Asante Presbytery Chairperson).
Currently, the Ramseyer Technical Institute runs the following Programmes: Building Construction Technology, Fashion Designing Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Catering and Hospitality Management, Automotive Engineering Technology, Wood Construction Technology, Plumbing and Gas Technology and General Agriculture/Agricultural Mecahnisation. The total number of students admitted as the first batch of students under the Free TVET Policy for the 2023/2024 academic year was three hundred and twenty 320 (194 Boys and 126 Girls).
